After a few environmental impact assessments, the Brazilian environmental organization Fundacao Estadual de Protecao Ambiental (Fepam) on July 14 issued a company Braskem (Sao Paulo, Brazil) operating license for the plant to produce “green” ethylene capacity equal to 200 thousand tons The license allows for launch production in August this year – two months ahead of schedule.
Vice President, Business Unit «Basic Petrochemical» Manoel Carnauba Cortez said that the technology at the facility are made in accordance with the most advanced environmental criteria. Mr. Cortez also informed that already 80% of future production from the plant were sold to customers in Europe, USA and Asia. Brazilian petrochemical giant, said that global demand for green polyethylene is about 600 thousand tons per year, which is three times more power to the new plant.
In Braskem said that their plant will be the first in the world to use 100% renewable raw material on an industrial scale. The work on the subject was launched in April 2009, investments to date a total of $ 500 million BRL (about 219 million euro). Ethylene, produced at the plant, will be processed into polyethylene at another factory located in Triunfo, in southern Brazil.
